Spanky took me to the Eames house in Pacific Palisades a while back. I’m a bit of a fan of the Eames’ and it was a special day for sure. We walked a ways back to the car when Spanks turns around and says ” Take a picture of that tree”. It was perfectly sillouetted behind the sun. Very cool. In fact my painting does not do it justice. However it’s my blog not yours ( hence the lack of grammar, syntax, and margins or something).
I had a bit about trees. I was thinking that when each of us imagines a place that we want to get back to someday it usually has a really nice tree in it. There’s some archetype in our collective unconscious of a peacful place and a tree being at it’s center. We just keep pushing it back in our minds saying “I’ll go visit someday”. The tragedy is, of course, most of us don’t.
I made this over a week. First I masked the whole canvas (it’s actually pretty big). Then I drew the tree by hand and cut the drawing out using an exacto knife. Which is scary because I itch a lot and tend to scratch with whatever is in hand.
I painted over the masked out portion and then pulled it. After putting on some leaves for color I say this was a worthwhile experiment.
